Thoughts on DC Comics This Week
I got sick and then got busy, so I've been slacking off these past couple weeks. I won't waste time catching up on everything I missed, so here's my thoughts for THIS week's comics. The first issue of Mega Man Timelines dropped this week (finally!), but I'm going to give that its own post. Otherwise, I really only have stuff to say about DC this week.
Batman preview: I admit I have not been reading the recent Batman run--just have too many books and had to cut something. Is there a reason Batman is getting a relaunch? I love Jimenez's art, so I might try picking it up, but WHY.
Red Hood preview: Hooray on Red Hood getting his own series! I think getting out of Gotham and being free to do his own thing will be good, not being tied to whatever the rest of the Batfamily is doing. And the art looks amazing. I'll try issue 1, but I don't know if I want to commit to it.
JLU 8: I'll be real, my LCS got shortchanged on issue 7 and we're still waiting for it to come in, but I went ahead and read JLU 8. I am very happy to see Jonah Hex, a character I like but he so does not fit into the Superhero laden DC universe. I'm wondering if Waid has a specific plan for him going forward, or if he's just an extended cameo?
Air Wave redemption arc is proceeding as I assumed it would, though I am surprised at how empassioned Mr. Terrific was about his disappearance. I am not opposed to mentor-mentee relationships being explored in comics, but I never got the sense they were that close? Air Wave seemed to have a good relationship with most, but part of the reason why Grodd was able to manipulate him was because he wasn't INTEGRATED the way 'modern' heroes are with each other.
Teaser at the end with Time Trapper talking about a 'crisis', oh lord. I really hope this isn't a Marvel-style relaunch AGAIN, I've been enjoying the majority of the current DC runs I've been reading. I do think its interesting how the 'time is coming to an end' is focusing almost entirely on Superman and family but, of course, a little Batman is sprinkled in, too. Meanwhile, over in the Flash book they're having a Time War on the MOON, and it doesn't even get a background face close-up...
Flash 22: Still unnecessarily convoluted, though I like the underlying currents of family strife in the face of the family patriarch's suffering. I don't really think I'll be able to have salient thoughts about this storyline until I can see the whole picture, as it's told in a very jarring manner, but I can see it coming together. The characterization of the characters has been shining through despite the... loose...? dialogue and exposition.
DC x Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Fun to see Blaze, always happy to see Metal Sonic, even if it was basically a cameo. Flash just taking the emerald and running from the Deadly Six was pretty funny and actually the rational response. Dude's on a time crunch, right? This whole event is tailor made for me, personally. I like how Flash really enjoys Sonic's world, being a place made for running. The bit where's he's talking to Batman about the loops was nice; for the most part, I like when heroes enjoy their powers. Why does Superman talk like a robot, though? And I like Stewart getting rainbow powers from the Whisps. Probably the best part of the issue, since he's used to dealing with aliens. All in all, the universes have good synergy.
Absolute Wonder Woman 9: continues to be great. I find myself wondering exactly what the abilities of Diana's lasso are in this universe, as she seems to be able to use Nemesis to tell friend from foe (or at least, whether or not something is evil?) but I'm not in a hurry. Diana herself is an excellent character in this, but most of her entourage from Earth are not nearly as interesting. Hopefully that will be rectified in the future, when they get more opportunity to flesh themselves out. The Minotaur in the maze is an obvious but thematically appropriate location and event for Diana to delve into, though its implied to be tied to larger events. We shall see where this goes.
